WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL THERAPY?

Nutritional Therapy is more than just diet and weight loss, and more than your health food store, weight loss group or fitness "nutritionist" who have often done just a weekend's worth of study in nutrition. It is the application of nutrition science, using a functional medicine approach, in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional therapy practitioners are qualified to the highest standards, CANN therapists have a minimum of an undergraduate diploma, and most have studied either an undergraduate degree or a post graduate Masters degree in Nutritional Therapy. They are all BANT members and CNHC registered. So you can rest assured we know what we are on about, even down to how your genes work and how they interact with nutrients.

Nutritional Therapists use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s signs, symptoms and health issues. From genetic testing to look at familial history/genetic predisposition, to working with other medical professionals to look at medical history and blood, saliva, stool or even hair tests to look at the impact of your current lifestyle or even recent life events on your health. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health via an individualised nutrition, nutraceutical and lifestyle programme.

Nutritional therapy is also recognised as a Complementary Medicine and is relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking to enhance their sporting performance and/or to support general health and wellbeing. Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition, nutraceutical and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Practitioners never recommend nutritional therapy as a replacement for medical advice and always refer any client with ‘red flag’ signs or symptoms to their medical professional. They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the individual’s care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.
